Newton called it the third law of motion: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This interaction happens all around us every day, and not only in the natural of physics but in the supernatural as well. Some say, what goes around comes around. Believers call it the law of sowing and reaping. It doesn’t really matter what you call it, when something happens, something else is going to happen as a result.
With salvation God moved first, we respond by moving forward to accept or backward to reject. Either direction is a movement of reaction. The MSG version describes it this way, With our whole being we embrace God setting things right. When your reaction is to embrace something you grip it and make it your own. You can’t sit back and have God’s offer done to you, you have to move forward and take it: You possess it.
That’s why the Israelites had to fight to possess the land even though God said He was, “ giving ” it to them. Possession requires forward motion not passive acceptance. If there wasn’t going to be work involved, the difficulties on the path would have been removed, like the obstacle of water was removed when they left Egypt.
First see how good the land is
The adage in the culinary world is, people first eat with their eyes. God already knows it, that’s why He had them spy the land first. They had to see just how abundant it was and that the fight for possession would be worth it. What they saw was amazing, the land flowed with milk and honey.
Milk and honey in marriage
In marriage God lets us spy our promised land too. Before any possession has begun we feel that fleshly lusty rush we when we first see our future husband. It’s the dreamy romantic feelings, the all-encompassing infatuation that overcomes us. Our taste of “milk and honey.”
We are meant to begin with the end in mind. It is with this vision of the Promised Land that we journey through a marriage. It’s the work we put into possessing our marriage that will bring the abundance of milk and honey.
Parts 1 and 2 to be published over the next few weeks.
POSSESSION – Part 2: Courage to Possess
